A bit of the History of Hernando County Surrounding our Bed and Breakfast:

Hernando County was named after Hernando de Soto, the first European to explore Florida and South East America.  You will find markers of Hernando's arrival on the outskirts of Brooksville where in 1539, at the behest of Charles V, King of Spain, Hernando de Soto landed on the Florida's west coast (the gold coast, sun coast or nature  coast) with 1,000 soldiers.  Hernando remained and spent four years exploring the area searching for gold and silver.

Part of The Nature of Brooksville That's Unique:

Brooksville Florida is not only the landing place to Hernando de Soto, but the only place in the world you will find the exceptionally rare Brooksville Bellflower.  The Brooksville Bellflower is endangered and was placed on the Federal Register in 1989.  There are only two documented spots on the Brooksville Ridge where it can be found and photos are extremely rare.  The Brooksville Bellflower is an annual herb with a slender taproot and slender, four-angled stems that reach a height of between 0.4 and 6 inches.  The self-pollinating flowers do not open often, and thus the Brooksville Bellflower is easily overlooked.  The flowers that do open are very small and cross-pollinating with deep purple, bell-shaped corollas.  The Bellflower blooms in the months of March and April, and the seeds produced are the smallest of any North American bellflower.  Photos of the Brooksville Bellflower are extremely rare.

Brooksville is also home to a second endangered species, the Cooley's Water Willow.  Blooming from August to December in just a dozen known places on the Brooksville Ridge, this plant is less than 16 inches tall, the flowers occur on forked branches just slightly longer than the leaves.  Mottled lavender and white, the rest of the corolla is bright lavender-rose.
